Monday Milestones: FD Lofts--a Unique Detroit Neighborhood

Urban Life Development has renovated the old Detroit Fire Department Repair Shop located at 3434 Russell Street. Here is the description from the website:

The FD Lofts at Eastern Market, formerly the Detroit Fire Department Repair Shop, is a National Register Historic Building. New high quality living environments have been designed and constructed within the building’s original industrial character. Designed for young and old urbanites alike, the beauty and charm of century old brick, soaring wood-beam ceilings and ten foot tall industrial-sized windows are presented with industrial chic flair.

This is another great example of the unique housing options in the City of Detroit.

Shopping in Detroit: Faygo Pop

"Which way did he go? Which way did he go? He went for FA-A-A-A-Y-G-O-O-O-O!" Ok, if you remember THAT commercial, you really are old skool! Faygo Pop was invented right here in Detroit in 1907 by two Russian immigrant bakers, who adapted the recipe from their cake icing! The original flavors were Fruit Punch, Strawberry ("Red Pop"), and Grape and bottles sold for 3 cents each or 2 bottles for a nickel.
[Don't forget to vote for your favorite flavor in the sidebar!]

Around 1910 Faygo started being called "pop" because of the sound made when the bottles were opened. "Rock and Rye" was introduced in the 1920s (when home deliveries started), "Orange" in the 1930s, and "Root Beer" and lemon-lime "Uptown" in the 1940s. It was also in the 1930s that the Faygo bottling plant moved to its present-day location on Gratiot near the Eastern Market.

The "Faygo Kid" commercials began in the 1950s...diet pop, including "Frosh" which is still available today, was introduced in the 1960s.

Betcha didn't know that you could buy Faygo Pop and Faygo Logo apparel online! So, if you're a long way from home and yearning for that Red Pop, find your mouse and credit card and start shopping!

Detroit Police Chief Says: "My Bad!" for Bike Licenses

As I wrote in my post: "Riding Your Bike in Detroit? Have Your License?", the Detroit Police Department will start enforcing the 44-year-old bike license ordinance on August 7: a $55.00 fine if you don't have a $1.00 license for your bike.

Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings tried to explain at a recent Detroit Board of Police Commissioners meeting that her intent was not to punish bike riders, but to be better able to retrieve stolen bicycles.

Ron Scott, a member of the Detroit-based Bike Riders United, feels that the enforcement in unnecessary and problematic. Chief Bully-Cummings replied that she didn't want police officers standing around writing tickets to bikers; she is just trying to help bike-theft victims to get their bikes back.

Bike Riders United will hold a unity protest bike-a-thon in Detroit on Friday, August 1 from 1 to 3 p.m.; starting at Eastern Market and concluding at Hart Plaza. Meanwhile, just to be sure, you can visit any of the six Detroit Police Districts and get a 5-year license for your bike.

Update: as of Friday July 18 2008, the Detroit Police Department has no more bike licenses available! Stay tuned to see what happens with the ordinance enforcement...

Russell Bazaar to Open in Late July 2008

As a Detroiter and/or Detroit Booster, you have most probably heard of Albert Kahn, one of the most prolific architects of the late 19th and early 20th century in Detroit. One of the beautiful buildings Albert Kahn designed in 1923 is now called the Russell Industrial Center, located near the Eastern Market.

Starting in late July, the new Russell Bazaar will officially open, giving Detroiters an opportunity to shop in the city in a beautiful indoor "trade center" venue. According to Eric Novak, leasing agent for the Boydel Development Group, the Russell Bazaar will eventually include seven stories, 160,000 sq.ft., over 600 vendors, and have a food court, live music, and a drive- and bike-in movie theater.

Yes, there are similar venues in the 'burbs, but with the opening of the Russell Bazaar, you can "Shop in Detroit"!
