Shopping in Detroit: New Center Eatery

For the people who live, work, and shop in the New Center Area, there is a cute little cafe right on West Grand Blvd. near Woodward that serves delicious food in a no-frills atmosphere.  The New Center Eatery specializes in chicken and waffles, a Southern "delicacy". Sandwiches, burgers, salmon, grits, omelets, steak and eggs, and other entrees are available, but the big, moist, chicken wings served with hot syrup on fluffy waffles are worth the $2.00 fee to park in the nearby lot.

As we all know, Senator Obama will be traveling home to Hawaii on Thursday to visit his seriously ill Grandma. There are actually some Republicans who are calling this a "political trick"...geez...

There are those of us who instead are hoping and praying that Madelyn Dunham lives long enough to see her precious first grandchild get elected President in two weeks and get inaugurated on January 20 2009.

Detroit's Unique Neighborhoods: Woodbridge

Woodbridge is a historic neighborhood in Detroit, originally developed along a streetcar line on the near-Westside. Located near Downtown, Midtown, New Center, and the Cultural Center, Woodbridge today is a growing and thriving residential and mixed-use neighborhood successfully blending the old with the new.

Many of the historic homes, built between 1870 and 1920 as single-family and two-family residences, are a variety of nineteenth-century architectural styles, including: Queen Anne, Colonial, and Georgian Revival. Stores, offices, bed-and-breakfasts, and art galleries are intermixed around the commercial districts on Grand River, Trumbull, Fourteenth Street, and 12th Street (Rosa Parks Boulevard). The neighborhood is located about two miles from Downtown between Grand River Avenue and the John C. Lodge Freeway.

New homes are also now part of Woodbridge: Woodbridge Estates consists of condomininums, townhouses, and single family homes with streets named after Motown Legends. It is located right off the Lodge Freeway and is another example of new housing stock and the regentrification of Detroit while preserving history.

Secretary Colin Powell wants That One!

Four-star General Colin Powell, former Secretary of State under George W. Bush, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under George H.W. Bush, former National Security Adviser under Ronald Reagan, and 25-year friend of Senator John McCain, has endorsed Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States.

Especially important to the City of Detroit is that both General Powell and Senator Obama have stated that education is extremely important to them and to America. Detroit's education system needs all of the "up high" help it can get.

Secretary Powell, on Meet the Press this morning, and at a news conference immediately following, stated the reasons for his decision (and emphasized it was not because of "race"):
1) the Republicans' narrow focus on irrelevant personal attacks, especially "Muslim" and "Bill Ayers" and "ACORN" instead of a serious approach to today's challenges;
2) the selection of Governor Sarah Palin as the vice-presidential pick;
3) questions about John McCain's judgment';
4) the style and substance and temperment of Barack Obama;
5) Barack Obama will restore America's standing in the world and diplomatic choices in dealing with the world.

Detroit Jewel: Angels' Night Initiative

Devil's Night, which is traditionally October 30, the night before Halloween, originally was a variation of "Mischief Night", where young people would commit minor acts of vandalism such as throwing eggs against windows, hanging toilt paper in trees, or overturning garbage cans.  "Devil's Night" or "Mischief Night" acts had been recorded as far back as the 1930s.

However, in Detroit starting in the 1970s, Devil's Night turned into a horrible night of arson. It started when homeowners or business owners who saw their property values decline decided to burn down their property for the insurance. Over the years, Devil's Night arson escalated into such a force that it attracted worldwide negative attention to Detroit. By the mid-1980s, 500- 800 fires were set each year.

By 1996, the new mayor of Detroit, Dennis Archer, had had enough. He decided to change the paradigm by first changing the name from "Devil's Night" to "Angels' Night" and challenging the citizens of Detroit to take their neighborhoods and city back.

Now, the three-day period from October 29 - 31 involves over 50,000 volunteers, one of the largest municipal volunteer initatives, who patrol the streets and look out for abandoned homes, and with the mandatory 6 pm to 6 am curfew where unaccompanied children and teens are taken into custody until their parents come to the police station, the number of fires has declined back to regular levels.

Doin' It in Detroit: Michigan "Scaregrounds"

For those who enjoy Halloween (I don't), the Michigan State Fair Grounds is hosting "Scaregrounds" every weekend through Halloween, ending with a Halloween Party on Halloween Night October 31 from 6 pm until midnight. On October 17 - 19 and October 23 - 30 the hours are:
Sunday - Thursday: 6 pm to 10 pm
Friday and Saturday: 6 pm to 11 pm
