Detroit's Unique Neighborhoods: Jefferson East/Lower Eastside

Jefferson East is a business and residential area located off the Detroit River on the border of Grosse Pointe. It is a mixture of historic housing stock, beautiful riverfront neighborhoods, over 500 new housing units, and one of the largest redevelopment areas in the country.
The Jefferson / Chalmers Citizen District Council (JCCDC) and the Southeast Waterfront Coalition (SEWC) are two of the homeowner and business association groups that work with the Jefferson East Business Alliance to grow and develop what is known as the "Lower Eastside".  Detroit famed "canal homes" are located within the Jefferson East Area.
Jefferson East offers Detroiters a combination of a growing commercial district, million-dollar riverfront homes, new townhouses, stable and close-knit neighborhoods, strong community associations, a yacht club and three marinas, parks, schools, churches, and community centers and and 2-day music festival: "Jazzin' on Jefferson in June".

The largest home in Jefferson East is the Lawrence Fisher Mansion, built in 1927 by one of the Fisher Brothers; a past president of Cadillac Motors and builder of the Fisher Building.  The Fisher Mansion, also once owned by the Ford Family is now home to the Hare Krishnas in Detroit.
