American Indian Movement of Michigan, First Nations Flotilla

THINGS TO DO THURDAY

Native Americans are getting their back to their roots on Friday, August 27, 2010 with a Detroit River Canoe Crossing to enforce the 1974 Jay Treaty Rights led by the American Indian Movement of Michigan. 200 canoes will journey across Detroit's, Belle Isle Island/Park to Windsor, Ontario, and back.

The goal of AIM of Michigan is to further the rights of the original people of the America's, to promote cultural understanding, to aid in human rights causes, to promote respect and understanding of humanity, the earth and all creatures.

Although often confused with the new group in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Detroit group is supported by Half Wolf Merchandise, whose artists are all of Native descent, and the proceeds of all sales inherently support the native community. The AIM of Michigan office is located on East Boston Blvd. in Detroit, Michigan.

NOTE: "The "Jay Treaty" was ratified by Congress in 1797. John Jay negotiated this treaty with Great Britain. Under Jay's Treaty, the British agreed to leave areas in the Northwest Territory which they had been required to return earlier, under the Treaty of Paris. This treaty did not, however, oblige the British to observe American neutral rights."

Happy #CanadaDay, eh?

OK, if you've lived in Detroit long enough, you know that one of our "bragging rights" is that Detroit is the only place in the USA where you go south to Canada! Windsor, Ontario is right across the Detroit River...we wave at each other!

Since we celebrate #CanadaDay AND #IndependenceDay here in Detroit, USA, I thought you'd like to know how ELSE you can tell if someone is a Canadian:
(Thanks to Canadian Ian McKenzie of Ian's Messy Desk)

  1. You understand the phrase “Could you pass me a serviette, I just dropped my poutine on the chesterfield.”
  2. You eat chocolate bars, not candy bars.
  3. You drink Pop, not Soda.
  4. You know that a Mickey and 2-4’s mean, “party at the camp, eh!”
  5. You don’t care about the fuss with Cuba. It’s a cheap place to go for your holidays, with good cigars and no Americans.
  6. You know that a pike is a type of fish, not part of a highway.
  7. You have Canadian Tire money in your kitchen drawers.
  8. You know that Casey and Finnegan were not part of a Celtic musical group.
  9. You brag to Americans that: Shania Twain, Jim Carrey, Celine Dion,
Michael J. Fox, John Candy, William Shatner, Tom Green, Matthew Perry,
Mike Myers, Neve Campbell and Pamela Anderson are all Canadians.
  10. You design your Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.
  11. You know that the last letter of the English alphabet is pronounced “Zed”.
  12. Your local newspaper covers national news on 2 pages, but requires 6 pages for hockey.
  13. You know that when it’s 25 degrees outside, it’s a warm day.
  14. You know how to pronounce and spell “Saskatchewan”.
  15. You perk up when you hear the theme song from ‘Hockey Night in Canada’.
  16. “Eh?” is a very important part of your vocabulary, and is more polite than, “Huh?”
  17. Your Beer Case handles Are Big Enough To Fit Your Mitts
  18. You know that we don’t all live in igloos and ride polar bears to work.
  19. Every murder is reported.
  20. You froze your tongue to something metal and survived to tell about it.

Betcha didn't know that the border between the US and Canada
is the longest continuous land border in the world!

Canada is a beautiful country; Ontario is a great Province; and Windsor is a fun and interesting city to visit! Sometime soon, take a trip to our "neighbors to the north"; but remember, to get to Canada from Detroit: go south, young man!

Detroit's Unique Neighborhoods: Jefferson East/Lower Eastside

Jefferson East is a business and residential area located off the Detroit River on the border of Grosse Pointe. It is a mixture of historic housing stock, beautiful riverfront neighborhoods, over 500 new housing units, and one of the largest redevelopment areas in the country.
The Jefferson / Chalmers Citizen District Council (JCCDC) and the Southeast Waterfront Coalition (SEWC) are two of the homeowner and business association groups that work with the Jefferson East Business Alliance to grow and develop what is known as the "Lower Eastside".  Detroit famed "canal homes" are located within the Jefferson East Area.
Jefferson East offers Detroiters a combination of a growing commercial district, million-dollar riverfront homes, new townhouses, stable and close-knit neighborhoods, strong community associations, a yacht club and three marinas, parks, schools, churches, and community centers and and 2-day music festival: "Jazzin' on Jefferson in June".

The largest home in Jefferson East is the Lawrence Fisher Mansion, built in 1927 by one of the Fisher Brothers; a past president of Cadillac Motors and builder of the Fisher Building.  The Fisher Mansion, also once owned by the Ford Family is now home to the Hare Krishnas in Detroit.

Detroit Neighborhoods: Historic Berry Subdivision

At this time of mayoral transition in the City of Detroit, it would be good to learn about the neighborhood in which the official residence of the mayor is located: the Historic Berry Subdivision.

The Berry Subdivision, previously called "Park View", is named after Joseph H. Berry, founder of the Berry Varnish Factory. Official platting began in 1914, but the first house was built in 1898 for clothing manufacturer Marvin M. Stanton. This home is known as "The Castle" because of its numerous turrets, towers, and roofs. Joseph Berry's daughters inherited the land and began to develop the subdivision with high-quality single-family homes. Some of the most expensive homes in Detroit are located here.

Many of the homes in the Berry Subdivision are located directly on the Detroit River and have boat slips on their property. There are 118 lots in Berry, but several homeowners took advantage of a building slowdown during and after the Great Depression, and bought and attached many of the undeveloped lots next to their homes, giving the subdivision the appearance of even more spaciousness. Four lots wre made into a dedicated park, named after World War II hero David F. Stockton.

The house on the easternmost edge of the Berry Subdivision is the Manoogian Mansion, the official home of the Detroit mayors since 1966. Alex Manoogian purchased the home in 1939 after the original owner lost the house during the Depression. The founder of Masco Corporation donated the home to the City of Detroit to be used as the official residence. Only New York City has as beautiful a home for its official mayor's residence; but only Detroit's mayoral residence has water frontage. Gracie Mansion in New York City faces a warehouse.

The boundaries of the Berry Subdivision are East Jefferson Avenue, Holcomb Avenue, the Stanton Canal, and the Detroit River.

Kwame's Staycation...He HAS to Stay in Detroit!

There has been a lot going on in the Mayor's life lately, so Kwame Kilpatrick announced today that he needs a "two-week vacation". But because of the court-ordered travel restrictions placed on him--he must stay in the Wayne-Oakland-Macomb Tri-County area, Mayor Kilpatrick will have plenty of time to stay at home in the Manoogian Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor of Detroit since 1966.

Why is the official mayor's residence called "The Manoogian Mansion"? Simple, the palacial home belonged to Alex Manoogian and the Manoogian Family for almost 30 years before they donated it to the City of Detroit in 1966. Alex Manoogian was an Armenian immigrant, businessman, and philanthropist who founded the Masco Corporation, most well-known for the development of the Delta faucet, as well as Merrillat and Kraftmaid Cabinetry. Masco is still located in Taylor, Michigan.

The Manoogian Mansion, which was built in 1928 at a cost of $300,000 and purchased by Alex Manoogian in 1939, certainly is spacious enough and has the beautiful views people love to see on vacation: the Spanish Colonial Revival-style home has over 4,000 square feet, 15 rooms, 2 dining rooms, 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, and 2 bedrooms and a bath for servants. There are huge windows on most sides, and of course a view of the Detroit River which is actually part of the home's "back yard". It is located in the Berry Subdivision, one of Detroit's Historic Districts.

It sounds like a beautiful place to have a "staycation", and after all, just like any vacationer, Mr. Kilpatrick is only "visiting" the Manoogian Mansion, as the home belongs to the City of Detroit--all mayors live there only during their tenure. Our next mayor will enjoy it just as much.

Sold Out! Jill Scott in Detroit at Chene Park

We took a long walk around the park after dark...we found a place for Detroit jazz/fusion lovers to spark...

On Sunday July 27, Chene Park was packed and rockin' for the Jill Scott Concert!

Just about every paid seat was filled; people were in their lawn chairs in the spacious and meticulously maintained green spaces, and lots of lucky boaters parked their watercraft on the Detroit River.

The night was perfect; the weather was perfect; the venue was perfect; Jill was perfect! Major props to North Philly!

Opening for Jill was an awesome musician named Bilal Sayeed Oliver--also from Philly--we could have listened to more of him.

You can get Jill Scott's latest album, The Real Thing, here; and Bilal's wonderful jazz/soul/fusion album, Soul Sista here.

Check out the remaining artists slated for Chene Park, and have some wonderful staycations right here in the "D"!

Happenings Only in Detroit: The Detroit Princess Riverboat Staycation

If you've lived in Detroit long enough, you remember fondly summer excursions to Bob-Lo Island Amusement Park on the Bob-Lo Boat with Captain Bob-Lo! (Obviously, I remember!)

In the years since Bob-Lo Island Amusement Park closed, several unsuccessful attempts have been made to bring back the "Bob-Lo Magic". For those of us who remember, it is a toss-up of which was more fun, the rides at the Park, or the voyage down the River by way of Amherstburg Ontario on the boat! (Remember, Bob-Lo is actually a part of Canada...always has been...)

Well, Bob-Lo Island is now a marina resort community (still only accessible by boat or plane), but we in Detroit can still experience that cruise up and down the Detroit River under the Ambassador Bridge by booking a lunch or dinner aboard the new Detroit Princess Riverboat.

The Detroit Princess is a true riverboat, with five levels (the top two levels almost totally outside), and perfect for summer fun. Both lunch and dinner public cruises are available every day of the week in warm weather; charters are available for private parties and special events.

If you are looking for a great way to enjoy your summer in Detroit with family and friends, cruising the Detroit River, seeing the beautiful sights of the skylines of both Windsor and Detroit, book a 2 1/2 hour on the Detroit Princess. Unlike Gilligan and the SS Minnow, you'll be back on land in less than 3 hours!

Today's "Betcha Didn't Know This About Detroit": The World's Only Floating Post Office!

Just about every day of the year, even in winter, the Detroit River has long and low freighters making their way around the Great Lakes. Of course, the freighters have people working on them for long periods of time...did you ever wonder how the workers got their mail? (View a live Detroit River webcam and see freighters going up and down the River in realtime...)

Betcha didn't know that Detroit has the world's only floating United States Post Office! Located just south of the Ambassador Bridge is the headquarters of the J.W. Westcott II Mailboat. Founded in 1874 by Great Lakes Captain J. W. Westcott who originally used just a rowboat to deliver orders to passing vessels, the company began its unique and official mail service in 1895.

The J.W. Westcott has its own ZIP Code (48222), to send mail to a vessel, one just addresses the mail to the vessel in care of the the "Marine Post Office, Detroit MI 48222". If you need to send an invitation to your next party to a sailor on the Detroit River, you can find the schedule of the freighters from the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, where you can also view a live webcam of the freighters on the Detroit River.
