Redeux News: DTE Energy Savings Program (PLEASE READ AND PASS ALONG)

Dear Shimekia,
DTE has a pilot program that is being run out of my office right now. It's called: "My Energy Analyzer: Energy Efficiency Assistance Program".

Y.E.S is a program that stands for Your Energy Savings. If you are low income, a technician will come to your house within 3-5 days and install a kit that includes: energy efficient lightbulbs, a shower head, programmable thermostat, pipe wrapping, sink aerators and more. If you are not low income, you will receive your package via postal mail in 2-4 days and have to self install each product.

This is a pilot so I am trying to inform as many ppl as possible. If you are interested, just email me and I will refer you or someone you know. Tell your church members, social clubs, hairstylists, barbers etc etc etc. I don't get any referral bonus or anything like that; but I did it myself and I KNOW more people need to know about this program and benefit from it. (Tell them that LaKisha Grimmett-Harris, a dte rep, referred you ; this will assure faster service and higher priority in scheduling.)

I think its important to get this information out to everyone who can benefit. If you are renting your home, you will need to get permission from your lanlord to have your pipes taped and showerheads installed.

DTE doesn't give away anything for free EVER, so please take advantage of this opportunity! You can also go to: yourenergysavings.com or call
866.796.0512, 866.796.0512   (press option 1 then option 6).
Thanks Morenike, for the notice. Readers feel free to leave comments on your experience with this program.

Redeux News: Home Improvement Grants in Detroit

News from your City of Detroit Central District Neighborhood City Hall Manager, Lori Cunningham...

Fifth Third Bank’s Neighborhood Impact Program
Fifth Third Bank’s Neighborhood Impact Program provides grants to eligible families at a 4:1 match, up to $10,000. For every $1.00 the homeowner has toward minor home repairs, Fifth Third Bank will grant $4.00. For example: if a homeowner needs a new roof costing $5,000.00, the homeowner will pay $1,000 and Fifth Third NIP will pay $4,000.

The grant is available to low-to-moderate income homeowners who need structural alterations, elimination of health and safety hazards, such as lead-based paint remediation, energy conservation improvements, improvements for easier accessibility for the handicapped, and other ‘quality of life’ repairs.

Fifth Third Bank is currently accepting applications for its Neighborhood Impact Program (NIP). The NIP provides grants to eligible applicants on a first-come, first-served basis with Fifth Third Bank customers having first priority, until funds are depleted. Since 2006 Fifth Third Bank has awarded more than $600,000 in grant money for NIP residents across southeastern Michigan.

The program’s new cycle of funding began in May and will run until the funds are depleted. If you need home repairs and are interested in getting more information about the Fifth Third Bank NIP, you can pick up a NIP application at any of the banking centers or contact Ms. Brenda Massey at (800) 246-5372.

Jackson 5 Exhibit to Open at Motown Museum

The Jackson 5

R.I.P. Michael
We miss you!
June 25 2009

The Detroit News reports:
Michael Jackson's career started in Detroit at Motown Records with his brothers as the Jackson 5, so the first anniversary of his death Friday is being marked by the Motown Historical Museum with a special, expanded Jackson 5 exhibit that opens that day. Jackson 5 were on the Motown label from 1968-75.
Some of the items on display at the museum, known to fans as Hitsville and located at 2648 W. Grand Blvd., include uniforms the Jackson 5 wore onstage, photographs, awards, a Michael Jackson doll, clips of the Jackson 5 cartoon series, as well as a uniform Michael Jackson wore early in his solo career. Jackson donated the uniform to the museum in 1988 when he was in Detroit on a tour stop. He also donated his hat and the famous, single rhinestone-encrusted glove (stolen once, and now in a highly secure exhibit).
The Jackson 5 exhibit runs Friday through Sept. 30. General admission is $10 for adults, $8 for children 12 and under and senior citizens. Summer hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Things To Do Thursday: Detroit Celebrates 145th Annual Juneteenth

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of slavery’s end in the United States. The national observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day began in Galveston, Texas in 1865.

Today, Juneteenth symbolizes overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles, the pursuit of knowledge and the determination to achieve greatness. It is also a time to celebrate our histories, assess and improve ourselves and plan our futures. Having evolved into a cross-cultural celebration, Juneteenth challenges each of us to "Celebrate Freedom, Celebrate Life."

According to Tom Feelings, the author of The Middle Passage:
Juneteenth is a day of reflection, a day of renewal, a pride-filled day. It is a moment in time taken to appreciate the African American experience. It is inclusive of all races, ethnicities and nationalities - as nothing is more comforting than the hand of a friend.

This year celebrations will take place all over the city. Detroit has the potential to be a mecca for black activism and revolutionary movements.

Virgil H Carr Cultural Arts Center of Michigan located in the heart of Downtown Detroit. Juneteenth Alive will be a mix of information, entertainment and education. Juneteenth is recognized by many African Americans as the official commemoration of the abolition of slavery. Famed Freedom Rights advocate and native Detroiter Chokwe Lumumba will give his first address to Detroit since being elected to Jackson MS City Council. Khary WAE Frazier will lead the cultural hip-hop band General Population as they record a LIVE ALBUM.  Call 313.598.0408 for more info or visit www.generalpopulation.org

UAW Meeting @ Cobo Center with Granholm

June 14, 2010---The United Auto Workers union opened its 35th Constitutional Convention at Detroit's Cobo Center today, where an estimated 1,200 delegates will elect a new president and other officers, and plot the union's future. The UAW represents workers in the auto industry as well as aircraft manufacture and other industries in the US.
David Guralnick / The Detroit News

The convention kicked off with about a dozen United Auto Workers protesting outside of the convention (Above). Al Benchich, a General Motors retiree and ex-president of Local 909 in Warren, attracts the attention of a Detroit Police officer after handing out flyers announcing a planned rally outside of Cobo Hall. (Below).
David Guralnick / The Detroit News
Sources quote Governor Jennifer Granholm during the opening of the session, "If we had a hands-off policy, GM and Chrysler would have been gone," Granholm was referring to the government bailout of two of the Detroit Three automakers."Your jobs would have been gone. We would be a nation making nothing."

Detroit News reports that Ford Motor Co. made $2 billion in the first three months this year, its fourth consecutive quarter in the black. General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC, although still in debt to the federal government, are stronger financially after short bankruptcies last year. GM made $865 million in the first quarter; Chrysler reported an operating profit, which excludes interest and taxes, of $143 million.

The problem many UAW delegates are seeking solutions for is how to regain some pay and fringe benefits they have sacrificed to help Detroit automakers survive. UAW delegates aired beliefs that the country’s economic crisis has unfairly burdened working Michigan families and that the City of Detroit needs massive programs of public investment, more state and federal aid and labor reform that respects the right to organize and bargain collectively. Several resolutions have been passed since Day 1 of the convention on Sunday, June 13, 2010.

Urban Agenda – A resolution approved, on Tuesday, June 15, supporting the UAW’s commitment to strong and vital urban centers. The union’s vision includes a strong safety net, quality educational institutions and access to high-wage jobs to lift urban residents out of poverty. “This issue is near and dear to our hearts because one in four children lives in poverty. They are not around the corner from us, they are next door to us,” said delegate John Anthony (Left) of UAW Local 602.

Redeux News: Hey Bud! The Tigers wuz Robbed!

Major League Baseball Commissioner "Bud" Selig decided on Thursday (June 3 2010) NOT to reverse the WRONG call by referee Jim Joyce that STOLE the first-ever perfect game from the Detroit Tigers.

Bud Selig, Commissioner of MLB.

Governor Jennifer Granholm (D-MI), who watched the 9th inning of the Wednesday game in disbelief, immediately issued a proclamation from the State of Michigan honoring the Detroit Tigers' pitcher Armando Galarraga true perfect game.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga (who just came up from the minors two weeks ago) was awarded a brand new Chevy Corvette by the president of General Motors North American operations, Mark Reuss.
