Monday Milestones: Maryann Mahaffey

Photo Credit: George Waldman (Metro Times)

As I watch the (ahem) goings-on of many of the present members of the Detroit City Council, I just felt like remembering and honoring Maryann Mahaffey, former Detroit City Council President. Maryann was a social worker by profession, but a true Liberal Progressive, fierce supporter of labor, and a tireless fighter for the rights of those without a voice in the City of Detroit, the nation, and the world.

Born in Burlington, Iowa in 1925, Maryann received her Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University and her Master's of Social Work from the University of Southern California. She was a Professor Emerita at Wayne State University, where she taught from 1965 through 1990.

Maryann was first voted onto City Council in 1973, and was President (by virtue of receiving the highest vote count in the Council elections) from 1990 through 1998 and again from 2002 until 2005, when she announced her resignation from Council because of health concerns. She died in July of 2006 at age 81 from leukemia.

Here is a great obit of Maryann Mahaffey by Jack Lessenberry from the Metro Times.
I would love to read your memories of Maryann Mahaffey in the Comments Section!
